What is ABS Pipe?

ABS pipe is a type pipe material used for drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) applications in plumbing. ABS is shorthand for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a type of plastic. ABS pipe can be distinguished from PVC by its black color. ABS is lighter weight than comparable sized PVC pipe and fittings.

Using ABS Pipe

ABS pipe like majority of plastic pipe materials are used for drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) applications as they are inexpensive, easy to install, durable, and are chemical and corrosion resistant. Like PVC pipe, ABS pipe can be solid wall or foam cellular core. Unlike PVC, priming is not necessary for ABS pipe but should be cleaned prior to solvent welding.

ABS Pipe or PVC pipe?

Using ABS pipe will depend on a variety factors but the most important will depend on the local plumbing code. Some plumbing codes prohibit ABS pipe and fittings for new and remodel construction. Another important consideration with ABS pipe is where it used. ABS pipe can be used behind walls and underground but will weaken if exposed to UV radiation from the sun. Cost is another factor to be considered: PVC pipe can be slightly cheaper than ABS pipe.
