How to Choose a Faucet based on Number of Holes?

Introduction

Faucets come in different types of setting spacing. Knowing number of holes and spacing of the holes will help in choosing the type of faucet for your kitchen or bathroom.

One, Two, Three or Four Holes

There are faucets that will work with one hole, two holes, three holes, or four holes. The additional hole depending on the faucet purchased, can be used for a matching soap dispenser. One-handle faucets will fit in either one hole or two hole vanities or counters. The additional second hole can be used for the soap dispenser. One-handle faucets that come with a deck or bottom plate can be installed in existing three hole counter or vanity and the plate. Two-handle faucets will fit typically in three hole vanities or counters. The additional fourth hole can be used for the soap dispenser.

Hole Spacing

There are two main types of hole spacing for faucets: narrow and wide. The narrow spacing or centerset spacing is typically used for bathroom vanities. The center-set is measured from the left hole to the right hole, center to center and is typically 4″. Most faucets with 4″ center-set spacing will be advertised for bathroom and will say on the box. The wide spacing or spread set spacing is typically used for kitchen counters. The spread-set is measured from the left hole to the right hole, center to center and is typically 8″. Spread-set faucets also made for bathroom vanities so it is important to measure the hole spacing prior to purchasing a faucet.
