How to Clear a Slow Drain

Introduction

Slow drains are frustrating when in use such as taking a shower and are a telltale sign that there could be a problem with your plumbing. There are many options to clean a slow drain and the best option will depend on the severity or type of blockage.

Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical Drain Cleaners work by dissolving residue or hair that builds up in the drain. They are easy to use but cannot be used in all situations. For example, older homes with less robust drain pipes or location restricted plumbing such as house boats may not be suitable. Chemical Drain Cleaners should also not be used in where water can splash back when used such as toilets or garbage disposals.

Drain Snakes

Drain Snakes are mechanical cables that have cutting heads to clear our blockages in slow drains. Snakes can be flat or coiled and are sized in diameter and length for the type of drain to be cleared. The advantage of drain snakes is that they can clear out blockages in a few minutes in contrast to chemical drain cleaners where a minimum wait time is required.
