Introduction
There are several types of tub materials that exist. Materials range from plastic polymers such as Acrylic to exotic metals such as Copper. While many factors go into considering the best tub material for your bathroom, our recommendation is for Porcelain-coated Steel tubs.
Types of Materials
Tubs come in variety of materials. Most tubs sold today are either Plastic, Fiberglass with Plastic coating, Steel with Porcelain coating or Cast Iron with Porcelain coating.
Acrylic or Plastic Tubs
Acrylic or Fiberglass tubs with Plastic coatings are tubs that lightweight and inexpensive. Acrylic tubs from popular manufacturers such as STERLING or DELTA usually are bundled with matching wall sets that transform the tub into a complete tub shower set.
Steel Tubs
Steel tubs with Porcelain coating are the middle ground between Acrylic tubs and Cast Iron tubs. They offer the longer durability than Acrylic tubs but are lighter in weight and less expensive than Cast Iron tubs.
Cast Iron Tubs
Cast Iron tubs are metal tubs with Porcelain coatings. Cast Iron tubs are thicker than Steel tubs of the same size and offer the longest durability of all tub material types. Cast Iron tubs are the heaviest of tub materials and require extra effort in installing. Cast Iron tubs come as both alcove or standalone tubs.
Exotic Tubs
Exotic tubs include high-end tubs made from materials such as Stainless Steel, Copper, and stone such as Granite. These tubs form the luxury end of the tub market and are usually free standing soaking tubs.
Choosing the Best Material
For alcove or tub/shower combinations, our recommendation would be Porcelain-coated Steel tubs. They offer the durability of other metal tubs and are easier to move and install than Cast Iron tubs. Porcelain-coated Steel tubs can be found at stores such as The Home Depot or any kitchen and bath showroom.
