Are there different PEX Pipe Types?

Introduction

PEX is a very popular material to use for new water pipe installation. There are two types of PEX pipe: PEX-A or Expansion PEX and PEX-B or Crimp PEX. Both PEX types are used but have differences in installation.

PEX-A or Expansion PEX

PEX-A or Expansion PEX is PEX pipe that uses cold expansion sleeve and expandable pipe to secure onto fittings. The advantage of the Expansion PEX is that it has built in expansion which reduces bursting in cold weather.

PEX-B or Crimp PEX

PEX-B or Crimp PEX is PEX pipe that uses rings or sleeves that are pinched or crimped onto the PEX pipe and fitting. PEX-B offers various types of rings or sleeves that can be pinched or crimped to create a leak-proof seal.

Are Expansion PEX and Crimp PEX Interchangeable?

No! PEX-A and PEX-B pipe and fittings should be used with there respective fittings. PEX-A fittings are designed to work with PEX-A pipe and PEX-B fittings are designed to work with PEX-B pipe. Improper seals or leaks could develop if pipe and fittings are mix-matched.

Which Type of PEX Should I Use?

Depending on what is required by local code and what you have existing, we recommend using PEX-A for your water supply.
